DSMY Marlins Youth Swim Team (formerly Ankeny AquaHawks)
The YMCA of Greater Des Moines offers competitive swimming for youth ages 6-22 at seven of our branches: Ankeny, Boone, Indianola, South Suburban, Walnut Creek, Waukee and Wellmark. All branches swim in the YMCA network, as well as have the opportunity to compete in USA Swimming. We have well-trained coaches and great facilities where we are able to keep kids active and competitive in the water!
Fall/Winter 2018-19 season: Sept 4 - March 2019. Registration opens: August 13 for returning swim team members; August 20 for NEW swim team members (please see tryout information on our swim team website for details.) Swim team tryouts for the 2018-2019 Fall/Winter season happened on August 27 and 28.
All swim team members must be a YMCA member AND register for the swim team through our Team Unify website: DSMY Swim Team

Junior Marlins (formerly Junior AquaHawks)
Jr. Marlins is a pre-swim team program for those young swimmers (4-13 years old) interested in participating on a competitive swim team, but still need work on their swim skills. It is a transition program between swim lessons and competitive swim team. During the practices, swimmers will work on endurance and technique for all four swim strokes as well as be introduced to starts and turns.
Each session is held one day a week for 8 weeks. Fall session is on Thursdays from 7-7:45 pm. Swimmers must be able to swim without assistance 25 years of Freestyle and 25 yards of Backstroke without assistance.
Please contact Cathy Westercamp at 515-346-1403 to set up an evaluation of the swimmer. If the swimmer tried out for Swim Team but did not make it OR has participated in Junior Marlins (Junior AquaHawks) they can register without an evaluation.

WATERBABIES is a parent/child water adjustment class that provides a special structured fun time for adults and infants. Objectives of the program are fun, exercise, parent education, water adjustment and safety. An instructor will lead the class in a group setting. At least one adult must be in the water with their child during the class time. (6 months-3 yrs. old)
PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS are for children 3-5 years of age. There are 4 levels available: PIKE, EEL, RAY or STARFISH. These levels are listed in order of Pike is the beginner level and starfish is our advanced level. We have a 1 to 4 student-teacher ratio. We focus on water safety, water exploration, and the basic strokes.
SCHOOL AGE SWIM LESSONS are for children 6-13 years of age. There are 6 levels available: POLLIWOG, GUPPY, MINNOW, FISH, FLY FISH or SHARK. The levels are listed in order of beginner Polliwog to advanced Shark level. We have a 1 to 6 student-teacher ratio.
Ankeny Family YMCA Pool
Our pool is 25 yards with 8 lanes. Our shallow end starts at 3.75 feet deep and goes to 8 feet deep in the deep end. We do not allow diving in our pool due to pool depth requirements. Our pool is kept 82 degrees.
Open Swim – Ages 14 & under must wear a swim necklace provided by the YMCA and return after use. Those who pass the swim test wear a green necklace and have full pool access. Those who do not pass/take the swim test must wear a red necklace. Ages 9-14 who don’t pass/take the swim test must stay in the shallow end. Ages 8 & under who don’t pass/take the swim test MUST have IN-WATER SUPERVISION w/in arm’s length of an adult age 16+
