Our swimming pools are a prime example of how we are utilizing community partnerships to serve and strengthen our community. In addition to Y member services and programming, we host competitive swim teams from both Simpson College and Indianola High School. Our pools serve a full range of community needs, from waterbabies and swim lessons learning to be safe and confident around the water to competitive teams working towards personal and team achievement to adults striving for a healthy lifestyle through water exercise, lap swim and aquatic therapy.
Did you know that drowning is the 2nd leading cause of death in children age 1-14? This is a staggering statistic and one where we know that we can make a difference! The Y is an accessible community resource to teach kids to be safe and confident around water. Through Y Swim Lessons, in addition to water safety instruction, participants learn new swimming skills, gain a sense of achievement, build connections with others, and increase physical activity levels. Swim lessons are about more than learning to swim!
If our class times and dates don't fit into your child's schedule, private swim lessons may be the answer. Private swim lessons are available for all ages and swimming ability! Participants will work with a swim lesson instructor to find the perfect time for your session. Classes are 30 minutes long and 4 classes are included in one program. If you are interested in private swim lessons, please fill out the private swim lesson form and email it to Mia.Gehringer@dmymca.org
The YMCA of Greater Des Moines offers competitive swimming for youth ages 6-22 at six of our branches: Ankeny (at Wellmark), Indianola, South Suburban, Walnut Creek, Waukee and Wellmark. All branches swim in the YMCA network, as well as have the opportunity to compete in USA Swimming. We have well trained coaches and great facilities where we are able to keep kids active and competitive in the water!
All swim team members must be a YMCA member AND register for the swim team through our Team Unify website:
Lots of great Boy scout programs are happening at the Indianola YMCA this spring. Even though these programs are targeted to boy scouts members, all participants are welcome.
We are blessed to serve a community with so many different user groups interested in utilizing our pools. With so many different needs to meet, our pool is the most programmed and scheduled area of our facility. We strive to use our pool space efficiently and to serve as many of our members' needs as possible.
