Meet the Personal Trainers & Fit with Friends Instructors
Name: Kim Friest
I started teaching group fitness classes about 25 years ago at Parks and Rec in Indianola - when I was just a child. Over the years as a certified group fitness instructor, I studied kickboxing, step aerobics, Pilates, etc. After early retirement two years ago from my full time job at Social Security, I became a Certified Personal Trainer and began working at the Y here in Indianola. Since then I have continued to study fitness with an emphasis on strength training and special populations. I am so pleased when I see people get stronger and healthier!
When I am not working out, I enjoy gardening, cooking, reading, watching college sports (mostly teams from Iowa) and hanging out with friends and family. My husband Jon and I love to travel and are always planning our next trip or trips. On our vacations we love to hike, eat local foods and drinks, and talk to the people that we meet.

How did you get started with Health and Fitness? What drew you in? I have been interested in Health and Fitness as far back as I can remember. I got my first pair of leg warmers, a head band and a walkman when I was 7 and remember exercising to my mom’s Richard Simmons videos. J I enjoyed sports in High School and the training that went along with being an athlete as well as designing “mock” exercise routines at my best friend’s pool in the summers. But it wasn’t until years later that I realized how passionate I was about health and fitness and about helping people achieve their goals. I worked for a major health care company for 10 years in various positions, the last one being the onsite Wellness Coordinator. During this time I had the opportunity to travel across the country participating in health fairs as a part of our company’s mission to educate and engage employees in a healthier lifestyle. While I loved traveling, I also loved meeting so many people who had the same passion I did for health and helping others. During this time I was invited to my local YMCA for a luncheon and an opportunity to see what the Y had to offer our employees. I was given a tour of the facility and during the last part of the tour; I met a bubbly, blonde, seasoned group exercise instructor getting ready to teach a class. She was so full of life and passion and it made me want to stay for her class! I walked away from that Y experience realizing there are people out there who love what they do and get paid to do it! That was my turning moment and I knew I needed to deeper pursue my passions as a career. I worked hard to become a Certified Personal Trainer and was blessed with mentors who were willing to pour into me and help me define my strengths and weaknesses. Since then, I have been privileged to work in some wonderful places, helping and training many wonderful people. Today I feel blessed and honored to be doing what I love to do, helping people change their lives.
Favorite Exercise and/or workout style: I love High Intensity Interval Training and Tabata Style Workouts! I also really like TRX and Kettle bell workouts.
Your Promise/Mentality: My promise is to help you be the best you that you can be. To help you become stronger, not just physically but mentally. To push you beyond your perceived limitations and to open your eyes to what you really can become. Sometimes a person just needs to find a program that works for them. Whatever your goal, I will work with you to give you the tools to succeed. If you DO the work, you WILL get the results.
