The John R. Grubb YMCA Aquatics Center offers swim lessons, classes and aquatics opportunities for every age and ability. From Waterbabies infant lessons to water exercise for seniors, there's something for everyone in our aquatics facility.
Safety Around Water is an independent program in partnership with local schools designed to reach children at risk of drowning and teach them basic water safety skills, but the skills it develops overlap with those taught in the Swim Basics stage of YMCA Swim Lessons. Students who complete Safety Around Water are prepared to transition directly into swim lessons to continue the learning.
6 months to 3 years: Waterbabies This instructor led class combines games, songs, and toys to help parents introduce their infants to the water in a fun and safe way. It’s a great way to get your child started off early in the water.
3 years to 5 years: Pre-school lessons These lessons introduce children to swimming and water safety as well as basic swim technique. Through our pre-school lessons children can realize that learning to swim can be fun! (We maintain a 4:1 ratio of child to instructor for these lessons)
6 years to 12 years: School age lessons We also offer school age lessons for youth to learn how to swim, want to become better swimmers, and those who may want to be on swim team as they get older. While still fun, these lessons focus more on swim technique and learning more advanced skills such as diving. Stokes covered throughout school age lessons include the front crawl (freestyle), back crawl, elementary backstroke, butterfly, sidestroke and breaststroke.
Make a splash
John R. Grubb Y is proud to be local partner agencies to USA Swimming Foundation. The USA Swimming Foundation's Make a Splash initiative is saving children's lives through swim lessons. Through Make a Splash, the USA Swimming Foundation partners with learn-to-swim providers, community-based water safety advocates, and national organizations to provide swimming lessons and educate children and their families on the importance of learning how to swim.
