Our Aquatic facility was added to South Suburban YMCA in 2006. Our facility offers a perfect blend of fitness and recreational opportunities. Half of our pool is made up of 4 lap lanes with a maximum depth of 5 feet. The other half is a family friendly shallow well with a mushroom fountain and a maximum depth of 3 feet 6 inches. The pool area provides a handicapped accessible ramp for pool entry and three large family changing rooms.
Life is Full of Lessons
We offer lessons for swimmers of all ages and abilities. If you are looking for a beginner child/parent class, skill development, adult lessons, or anything in between we have something for you!
6 months to 3 years: Waterbabies This instructor led class combines games, songs, and toys to help parents introduce their infants to the water in a fun and safe way. It’s a great way to get your child started off early in the water.
3 years to 5 years: Pre-school lessons These lessons introduce children to swimming and water safety as well as basic swim technique. Through our pre-school lessons children can realize that learning to swim can be fun! (We maintain a 4:1 ratio of child to instructor for these lessons)
5 years to 12 years: School age lessons We also offer school age lessons for youth to learn how to swim, want to become better swimmers, and those who may want to be on swim team as they get older. While still fun, these lessons focus more on swim technique and learning more advanced skills such as diving. Stokes covered throughout school age lessons include the front crawl(freestyle), back crawl, elementary backstroke, butterfly, sidestroke and breaststroke.
Private: 30 minute, individual instruction, available to anyone over 6 years.
The YMCA of Greater Des Moines offers competitive swimming for youth ages 6-22 at seven of our branches: Indianola, South Suburban, Walnut Creek, Waukee and Wellmark. All branches swim in the YMCA network, as well as have the opportunity to compete in USA Swimming. We have well trained coaches and great facilities where we are able to keep kids active and competitive in the water!
Fall/Winter 2019-20 season: November 1 - March 2020.
All swim team members must be a YMCA member AND register for the swim team through our Team Unify website: DSMY Swim Team
