From being a homeless veteran to helping others get back on their feet, this is Charles' story.
If there's fun and food involved, you know Charles will be part of the action. A familiar face at the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus (SHC) for the past five years, Charles never misses a chance to play bingo and is always involved in SHC happenings.
Though a bright spot in our community today, Charles has faced many challenges. He is an Army veteran and served three years in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne. After his service, he pursued his passion for graphic arts and photography and also worked for The Connection Café, which serves lunch to the hungry and homeless, and the Iowa Homeless Youth Center. Charles is an active volunteer and advocate for young people experiencing homelessness and is also a past recipient of the Opening Doors award, an honor which celebrates journeys from homelessness to hope.
When asked what he likes best about our campus, he replied, “The sandwiches on weekday mornings!” We told you he's always part of the food action.
