Meet Melanie, a Des Moines native from the South-side who graduated from Lincoln High School. After high school, Melanie went on to receive her Medical Secretary degree from DMACC. Her friends would describe her as kind and respectful, with a good sense of humor. Melanie is happiest when she is listening to music. Some of her favorite artists are the Beatles, Garth Brooks and Fleetwood Mac. One interesting fact about Melanie is that in the late nineties, she was a disc jockey at KJJY Star 102.5 and The HAWK!
When things didn’t work out in the relationship she was in, Melanie found herself with nowhere to live. She ended up staying at “Miss Jenny’s House” in the Drake neighborhood. She was referred to the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus, but Melanie was reluctant to apply because she didn’t know if this would be the right place for her and she was nervous about fitting in. Melanie eventually applied and was accepted, and six years later she continues to live here.
Since living at YSHC, Melanie has made new friends, been approved for SSD, and now is a participant in Section 8 program. The thing that motivates her most is God, and Melanie regularly attends Simple Church in West Des Moines. She enjoys living at YSHC because of the nice bed that is provided, the Tuesday night meal, and the opportunity to play bingo with the other residents.
Melanie recently started volunteering at LifeServe blood bank, and plans to add a companion animal to her household by adopting a cat from the ARL. When asked where she sees herself a year from now, she replied still living at YSHC because this is where she feels welcome. Melanie would like anyone that is facing homelessness and considering moving to YSHC to know that they will feel supported here and they can be themselves.
