Pam was born in Niagara Falls in upstate New York. She says her hometown is beautiful but she enjoys living at the YMCA Supportive Housing campus! Pam served in the military from 1980 to 1983, and she was able to spend some time in Germany which she loved. Pam came to Des Moines after living in Missouri. Pam struggled in Missouri because her community was closed-minded. She struggled to find housing for herself and her beloved partner of 12 years, and then her partner passed away. She moved into an apartment here in Des Moines but lost everything. After spending time at Central Iowa Shelter, she moved into YSHC in August. Pam’s favorite thing about YSHC is the staff! “The staff here is wonderful,” she says, “they are always ready to help!”
Pam raised two children as a single mom. She says this was a struggle because “I know how it feels to not have a father figure. It’s hard because I had to be both a father and a mother”. Her sons are happy and healthy adults now and she has two small grandchildren!
She is involved in the community here at YSHC in many ways. She attends community dinners and enjoys coloring with her neighbors. Pam also loves bingo nights! “I play bingo because I like winning!” she says. She says that YSHC helps her access “wonderful programs for veterans” and she feels well taken care of for her service.
Pam is a very hard worker and has worked in many different difficult jobs. She has worked in fast food, chicken plants, fields, and janitorial services. Pam hopes she can retire soon. “After all those days of working,” she says, “I’m excited for some leisure time”.
Now, after years of struggling, Pam says she is enjoying life. She dreams of retiring soon, enjoying life, and getting her kids up to visit. Of YSHC, Pam says, “This is home now. It’s really been good for me!”
