Before living at the Y, I was living in an apartment in West Des Moines. I lost my job, was unemployed and lost my car. I found my way to the Y because I was working at Iowa Vocational Rehab part-time through AARP, and I needed a place to live. I lived at the Riverfront Y for nine months and then moved to the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus when it opened.
I have met friends here at the Y and became a Christian. My favorite part about the Y is talking to others in the community room, having staff that care and having a membership to work out at all of the Y facilities. In the next year I see myself becoming healthier by exercising, watching what I eat, losing weight and keeping my diabetes under control. I also see myself meeting more friends.
Unique fact about myself? I get along with everyone, and I like talking to others and hearing their stories. I enjoy getting out and going to movies and Christian concerts and going out to eat with my best friend Melanie.
