The first time I ever worked out with a personal trainer was with Paul at the Walnut Creek YMCA. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. First, they gather pertinent information in order to match you up with the appropriate trainer. I believe the Y does this so you get the actual workouts needed and, more importantly, to get you the best teammate based on personality. At the time, I really needed a leader and a teammate.
I ended up working out with Paul for 30 one-hour sessions, three days a week. He was an amazing coach for several reasons. He is highly organized, and he had a plan for every day, writing down everything we did. He is also a great teacher. I was new to most of the things we were doing, so he really put an emphasis on doing the moves correctly and safely.
He brought out the best in me. His motivation was not yelling or authoritative but more as a teammate interested in seeing you make big plays. There is no way—no way—I would have worked out even remotely as intensely if Paul hadn't been there guiding me. Lastly, and most importantly, he’s super into it. This is what I responded to the most: his attitude. When someone has passion in their teaching, it makes it fun to learn from them. Paul truly loves training and exercise, and it came through with his positivity, his relentlessness, and most of all, his ability to relate and keep me moving towards progress.
I would recommend Paul to anyone, and every time I’m back home in Des Moines, I’m getting as many sessions with him as I can!
