My name is Richard and I am deaf. I read lips and can communicate in American Sign Language. I moved to Des Moines 27 years ago from Marina Del Rey, California which is west of Los Angeles.
Before moving to the Y, I stayed at the former Randolph Hotel for two months. I have lived at the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus since 2011. I like the rooms here, they are very nice and neat. Since living here I have learned to use the computers, and I have met some new friends that have now moved out.
I met my friend Melinda and her friend at the YMCA. I like to say hello to everyone and meet new people. I love Star Trek and miss my favorite Star Trek actor, Leonard Nimoy. He passed away in 2015. Leonard played Mr. Spock. My favorite teams are the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Cowboys. I enjoy watching sports on TV.
I have worked for Corn Belt Aluminum in Des Moines for 27 years where I make storm doors for production. I am also an usher (1993) and treasurer (2006) for Calvary Lutheran Church for the Deaf. I hope that the YMCA offers a sign language class in the future so that other people can learn sign language.
"I have been—and always shall be—your friend. Live long and prosper." -Leonard Nimoy (1931-2015)
