Six weeks of improving reading and math skills while having fun, making new friends, and exploring their curiosity — that’s our Power Scholars program at the John R. Grubb YMCA! We just wrapped up this summer program on July 21 with 88 kids from Findley, Oak Park and Moulton Elementary School.
Power Scholars focuses on reading and math for kids going into first through fifth grade. Students also took part in many enrichment activities provided by some of our community partners such as Iowa State University Extension with nutrition, gardening and STEM activities and After School Arts Program (ASAP) with art and music enrichment. The kids also enjoyed many individual and team-building games led by YMCA staff.
Our students also got the opportunity to learn about tennis at Drake University, volunteer at Meals from the Heartland, and take a trip to the zoo to see animals they had been learning about during the program.
We’re proud to watch our kids growing and thriving — and then seeing them complete the program with a hunger to learn even more. Programs like this are not possible without close partnership from John Deere, United Way, and BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life). Thank you to all our partners!
