Originally from Wyoming, YMCA Supportive Housing resident Max has traveled back and forth, from home to home, state to state, for years. Through the Grant Per Diem program, Max came home to Y-SHC and we’ve been able to provide him with the stability he needs to live a life full of hope, dignity and support.
Max is a veteran who served in the air force for four years. After he discharged, he moved to Las Vegas with his little brother for 25 years and worked in demolition and construction where he was able to “blow stuff up”. After 25 years, Max moved to Iowa in 2005 because his wife at the time had family here. When his marriage ended in 2010, he moved down to Florida and spent five years working on a fishing boat before moving back to Iowa and to Supportive Housing in 2015.
He’s a big baseball fan (Max’s favorite team is the Arizona Diamond Backs) and enjoys collecting baseball memorabilia! Ask him about his Diamond Backs, and he’ll tell you about 2001 where he was able to attend Game 6 of the World Series between his favorite team and the NY Yankees in Phoenix, AZ.
Max also enjoys hunting and fishing at Saylorville and Red Rock Lakes. In a year from now, he hopes to be employed and living closer to Indianola so he can hunt and fish more than he does now.
Describing himself as kind, generous and outgoing, Max has made new friends since he’s walked through our doors, and we’re all the better for it.
