Meet Lar! She is a lively fifth grade at Garton Elementary in Des Moines and moved to the United States only a year ago. She lived in a refugee camp in Thailand before coming to the states. She's part of a cultural group from Burma (Myanmar) called Karen (prounced Kah-ren).
Since moving to America, she's been adjusting to life here and is working on building her English skills. Lar joined Girls on the Run this spring and word on the street is that she is dedicated to her running and building relationships with those around her! At one of her practices, another teammate said, "Lar, you are talking so much more than at the beginning of Girls on the Run!"
Girls on the Run has been a safe and fun environment for Lar to build friendships. The coaches have notice that Lar has grown in confidence and easily spreads joy to her teammates and coaches. When asked what Lar likes about Girls on the Run she said, “I like running. It is fun! I like my friends. I like Mrs. Kasch and Ms. Lutes.”
We are so grateful that Lar was able to participate in Girls on the Run last season and has been supported and encouraged by both her teammates and her coaches.
Thanks for sharing your story with us, Lar!
Girls on the Run is getting ready to open registration for their Fall 2019 program. If you're interested in volunteering, coaching or participating, go to our Girls on the Run page for more details!
