Before Steven came to live at the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus, his life was chaotic. He struggled for seven years with substance abuse issues; by the time he arrived on campus, he said he was little more than “skin and bones.”
The stability and supportive services at YSHC helped Steven regain his health and his positive outlook on life. “I enjoy being here,” he said. “I appreciate having this opportunity to get my life back on track.”
A native of Jefferson, Iowa, Steven grew up playing sports and singing in choirs. An award-winning woodworker, he loves music, being outdoors, playing pool and taking walks with his beloved orange cat, Skitzet.
Steven now has a job at Fuzzy’s Tacos and hopes to work his way back to being a line and prep cook. Although he has faced difficulties in life, Steven says it hasn’t kept him from caring about others. “If I have something to offer someone, I will give it,” he says. “I also always keep things real and don’t judge anyone because I don’t know what they’ve been through”.
