Lazaro moved from Cuba to Chicago in 1980 and eventually his life journey brought him from Chicago to Wisconsin and then Des Moines! His first home in Des Moines was crowded, and he feels so lucky he found his home at the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus where he has quiet, private space. Lazaro says about YSHC: “this is my forever home. I like it here, the people are nice, and this is my family”.
Lazaro treasures his American citizenship and the sense of belonging he has found in the United States. “This is my country,” he says, “in America, there is liberty for everyone”. He loves Cuba, but now Iowa is his home.
He has spent the last 21 years managing a parking lot near YSHC. He loves to work, and finds a lot of joy in his job. One of his favorite things about YSHC is how close he is to his work, and to the bus station for anything else he needs. Lazaro says that what he likes to do for fun is to work! He also likes to talk to the people around him at YSHC.
Lazaro loves everything about his life here at YSHC. He says that he has found his permanent home. “I am going to be here for a long, long, long time. I want to spend the rest of my life here”. To him, what he has found at YSHC is a forever home, and a family.
