Philip grew up on the south side of Des Moines with two sisters and one brother. After facing some difficulties in life, Philip came to the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus from Fort Des Moines Community Corrections Complex. He was given a list of housing options and picked YSHC because of the bus accessibility, supportive services and community YSHC offers. He’s also loved the chance to meet his neighbors.
Philip works at Culver’s at the register and drive-thru (He says he is a “curd nerd”!). He has a mind for engineering so he loves the work of setting up and operating the machines. His engineering brain also makes him a master at Legos and puzzles!
Some of the things Philip likes about living at YSHC are his neighbors, doing puzzles or coloring in the community area, food rescue, his case manager, his financial literacy class, the friendly staff, community meals and resident jam sessions. He hopes someday he can learn an instrument and join in the jams!
The support of his case manager and friendships within the YSHC community help empower Philip to meet his goals. He is working toward becoming a manager at his job at Culver’s soon and plans to stay at YSHC for a few more years to build up savings and get on his feet. Philip says he loves the staff and neighbors here at YSHC. “The Y has made me less shy and more open,” he says. Thanks, Philip, for choosing the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus to call home!
