Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in third through eighth grade. We teach life skills through dynamic interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.
Girls on the Run of Central Iowa serves Boone, Carroll, Clarke, Clay, Dallas, Des Moines, Dickinson, Greene, Hamilton, Jasper, Lee, Lucas, Madison, Marshall, Polk, Story, Warren, Webster and Union County and is an Affiliate Council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of over 225 councils across the United States and Canada.
We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running.
We envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.
We strive to:
Recognize our power and responsibility to be intentional in our decision making
Embrace our differences and find strength in our connectedness
Express joy, optimism and gratitude through our words, thoughts and actions
Nurture our physical, emotional and spiritual health
Lead with an open heart and assume positive intent
Stand up for ourselves and others
Fall 2020 Update
At Girls on the Run, social-emotional learning is the cornerstone of our research-based lessons. We support girls in identifying and processing their emotions, a skill that is critically important in today’s world.
Despite uncertain school and activity schedules, GOTR is prepared to adjust to meet the needs of our community. With alternate and flexible programming available. We are committed to fulfilling our mission of inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. Whether teams meet safely in-person or connect virtually, we are excited to kick-off the fall season.
