The Pieathlon is a great beginner level sprint triathlon, that features a 400m indoor swim, 12 mile bike ride, and 3 mile run. The event is chip timed.
However, the Pieathlon means much more than that. The event spotlights the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and a community of meaningful relationships, like those found at the Y, on people as they go through difficult life challenges, such as cancer. Each year, the event spotlights Y members who have become testaments to that.
The Pieathon was founded by Dave Milburn in an effort to honor his wife Penny's cancer survivorship story. She found support through their Ragbrai friends as she won her battle. The friends had a tradition of eating pie together at the end of Ragbrai, signifying a journey well done. Hence, the significance of "Pie" in Pieathlon.
A youth triathlon will take place after all sprint triathlon athletes complete swimming. The youth triathlon will consist of a 200-yard swim, 3-mile bike, and 1-mile run. The youth tri will start 10 min. after the last adult sprint tri swimmer finishes.
An event for the WHOLE family to enjoy!
