Learn how to effectively prevent and respond to water emergencies. Our courses are designed to arm you with the skills and knowledge to prepare you for a variety of scenarios in and around the water. You will learn how to quickly respond to emergencies both in the water and on land. You will also be trained on drowning and injury prevention, so you can better help those in need. Lifeguard certification classes require an online course to be completed prior to the classroom sessions.

Community CPR/First Aid/AED Classes
Located at the South Suburban YMCA, this course will prepare you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children and infants. This course meets OSHA/workplace requirements. This is a "blended learning" course that includes an online portion and an instructor-led classroom skill session. The online portion must be completed prior to attending the in-class portion and it must be taken on a PC or tablet with a high speed internet connection. Please allow approximately 2 hours & 30 minutes to complete the online portion. Click here to access the online course. Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a digital certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED which is valid for two years.
2 class options:
1st Friday of the month, 10am-12pm (Learn and Play Center available for participants' children)
3rd Sunday of the month, 1-3pm (No Learn and Play available)
Cost is $50 for Y members, $65 for non-members
Safety Training for Swim Coaches
The Safety Training for Swim Coaches course, developed in partnership with USA Swimming, is intended to teach those involved in competitive swimming how to help maintain a comfortable and safe environment for swimmers, prevent accidents and emergencies and respond to swimmers with illnesses or injuries in water or on land. Before attending this facility-based in-water skills session, participants must complete the Safety Training for Swim Coaches Online Content Only course (HSSAQU303) with American Red Cross which includes the web-based delivery of content and an online exam. Participants must be 15 years or older. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Safety Training for Swim Coaches/First Aid which is valid for 2 years.

Swim Officials Training
The three different Swim Officials Training courses are designed to certify or recertify participants to be Swim Officials for the YMCA Competitive Swimming in the areas of Referee, Starter and Chief Judge, Stroke and Turn Judge, Relay Take-off Judge, Place Judge, and Timer. We also offer a course designed to certify administrative (dry deck) swim officials for the YMCA of the USA's Competitive Swimming Program. Each of these courses focus on the specific duties and responsibilities of the above officials prior to, during and after a swim meet. Successful completion of a written examination is required to pass the courses. All classes will be held at the Wellmark YMCA with a $40 registration fee per class.
This course will strengthen your lifeguard skills and train you to teach lifeguard certification courses. Courses include Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Aquatic Attraction Lifeguarding, Waterpark Skills, Waterfront Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Bloodborne Pathogen Training. Participants will earn an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification valid for 2 years upon successful completion of the course.
